Analysing crowd movement at the Fédération Française de Rugby Grand Stade

Our role

Steer Davies Gleave was appointed to undertake an analysis of the vertical circulation of spectators attending events at the new French National Rugby Stadium in Evry, Paris. The aim of the exercise is to identify how the proposed stadium design will perform in terms of crowd movement up through the building, on vertical circulation movement elements such as escalators and lifts, before the start of events at the stadium.

How we did it

A spreadsheet-based modelling tool was developed to analyse vertical crowd movement and test the impact of providing different numbers of escalators and lifts for two of the stands where it was felt that the circulation could be rationalised or improved.

The analysis has tested two main scenarios in order to capture the range of variation in spectator behaviour in terms of arrival times to the stadium before an event;

  • A Six Nations international rugby match; and
  • A popular music concert.

The analysis illustrated the likely queuing time for each of the groups of spectators for the stands that were examined and highlighted locations where more vertical circulation was required or in some cases, less. Our analysis enabled the architects to make the design more efficient and reduced costs at some locations.
