Rail industry expert (Ref: AD30)

Location: LondonLeeds or Manchester

If you have demonstrable experience in the rail industry with specific expertise in forecasting train and TOC operating costs then we’d love to talk to you.

In this challenging role you will be part of a growing and dynamic team that provides advice to clients on rail transactions and investment decisions in the UK and globally. Within days of joining us you will be in client-facing project teams solving some of the most challenging problems in our sector.

The work that you will do will be highly varied and challenging, requiring you to quickly integrate into high-performing teams. Your projects will include working for public and private sector clients of differing timeframes and work intensities. You will deploy your cost-modelling and consulting expertise on a variety of projects including:

  • Franchise transactions;
  • Financial and economic appraisals; and
  • Strategic investment analysis.

In your work with us you will need to balance four elements:

  • Winning work where you will work to develop relationships with clients and prospective clients, identify opportunities and deliver proposals;
  • Advising clients by understanding client needs and undertaking analysis in bespoke integrated teams matched to client requirements and often involving niche supply chain expertise and strategic partnerships;
  • Developing capabilities of you and your colleagues through on the job and self-directed learning as well as targeted training through our Learning and Development team and;
  • Realising business objectives by applying your astute commercial skills to achieve high quality projects and proposals within cost, time and scope constraints.

Essential

In this role it is essential that you can demonstrate the following:

  • An understanding of train operations and the main drivers of costs in passenger rail businesses in the UK; 
  • Extensive experience of developing robust, user-friendly and flexible cost forecasting models in the rail sector, sourcing inputs and using key outputs to provide advice to colleagues and clients;
  • Your ability to manage projects or work streams comprised of junior analysts and more senior experts and potentially sub-contractors;
  • An ability to sense-check your own work and that of others systematically;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical details clearly, to non-technical audiences; and
  • Your interest in and understanding of the rail sector and willingness to gain experience of working on commercial and strategic issues within it.

Desirable

We are also interested in understanding additional competencies and background that you may bring, including:

  • Experience of preparing cost forecasts and economic appraisals in accordance with HM Treasury Greenbook guidance;
  • Experience of forecasting rail passenger demand and revenue;
  • Experience of forecasting costs for passenger rail businesses in other countries;
  • Business and financial modelling experience;
  • Other rail industry consulting expertise;
  • Your ability to build strong relationships with clients and potential clients, identify business development opportunities and win work;
  • Your enthusiasm for understanding the issues which clients are seeking to answer, and the context within which they are required;
  • Your ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in teams across disciplines; and
  • Education to degree standard, preferably in a numerate subject (such as Economics, Engineering or Maths).
