Market Leader - Rail Commercial (REF: AD41)

Location: London, Leeds or Manchester

Steer Davies Gleave is a highly respected technical and commercial advisor to the UK rail market. You will have the important role of shaping the strategic direction of our rail commercial offer and the development of our business and talent.

Key Accountabilities

  • Delivering high-quality commercial advice as part of multi-disciplinary teams, contributing to the company's reputation for delivering excellence.  
  • Managing and developing client relationships, working with colleagues to establish needs for commercial and regulatory advice and other areas of our expertise.
  • Strengthening our brand: promoting the firm’s rail commercial advisory work.
  • Acting as a Project Director to manage and direct multi-disciplinary project teams across a variety of commissions, to support both public and private sector clients on commercial and regulatory aspects.

- Supporting public sector clients including franchise/concession strategy development, franchise specification, franchise procurement and bid evaluation, regulatory matters such as Control Period changes to franchise contracts and fares changes, rolling stock procurement, investment case making, engaging in a senior capacity with staff from the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Office of Rail and Road regulation amongst others, to provide strategic, technical and commercial advice.

- Supporting private sector clients including bid direction, leading teams advising transport groups on franchise bids, M&A in the UK rail sector, business planning, rail freight, rail operations, operational mobilisation, and engaging in a senior capacity with transport owner groups and others to provide strategic advice on business development and commercial matters.

  •  Maintaining oversight of key market trends and communicating these within the company to ensure our offer remains at the leading edge.

Experience/Skills/Knowledge

  • Experienced rail industry professional with track record of delivery of transaction based projects/schemes, this would ideally include management experience within the operational railway and/or consultancy background or familiarity with consultancy work.
  • Deep understanding of rail industry processes and commercial issues within the rail sector.
  • Experience of franchise bid work involving financial and negotiation elements of the process would be desirable, but a background in other rail-related transactions would be of interest. Recognised professional in the rail sector.
  • Possess a skill mix that covers:

- Strategic planning
- Commercial acumen
- Business cases
- Industry knowledge

  • Periodic review, EC rail work, CP changes, fares changes, industry structures.
  • Regulatory processes that impact on the commercial behaviours of industry participants.
  • Business development capability to assist managing and developing key clients.
  • Able to work at the most senior level within the public sector, regulatory bodies and stakeholder bodies.
  • Strong commercial and financial awareness, with an appreciation of commercial risks within the rail sector.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work at senior levels to bring together and cohere the variety of professional skills of our team
